Helping university students settle into the next stage of their lives

Welcome to The Reconnection Club

This website is written for parents whose children are of university age.

As young people transition from being dependant teenagers into independent adults, their university years are often the first experience they have of living away from home. Mastering the washing machine, financial management, feeding and fending for themselves are just a few of the life skills a student must acquire and adjust to. There are also deadlines to meet, friendships to navigate, and considerable social pressures to contend with.

When our children go off to university, we hope that they’ll make new friends, be happy, confident, and flourish... but with so many new responsibilities, it's no wonder that many students can start to feel anxious, lost, stuck and at times unable to cope. If your child is struggling to acclimatise to their new environment and independent lifestyle, psychotherapy can be helpful to address these difficult feelings.

When things aren't going well it can be hard to reach out for help... very hard. As parents, not knowing what to say or do at times like these can be very upsetting and frustrating. Your child might find it hard to admit that there’s a problem or could be unsure of what kind of help they want or need. For this reason, many students find it easier to talk to a neutral person outside of their family unit. This is where talking to a therapist can help. This is where I can help.

My name is Natalie, and I am a UKCP trained / BACP registered psychotherapist specialising in providing confidential online psychotherapy sessions to university students.

If you feel that this type of support would be appropriate for your child and would like to schedule a therapy session, I can be reached on;

Empowering Minds

The type of therapy I provide is compassionate and effective. It is also specifically designed with the intention of empowering clients to feel comfortable within themselves, and to love and embrace exactly who they are.

Who am I?

Why having a sense of who you are is so important

As we move through time and space getting older, we also gain a better understanding of who we are as a person. Carrying this information around with us provides a foundation from which to ground ourselves when times get tough. For this reason, I'm a big advocate of exploring ones identity in therapy. Having a strong sense of knowing who we are at a deep, cellular level can be very beneficial to our wellbeing and can help us to harness the personal power we need to reconnect back to ourselves and to others.

A little bit about me

I have two teenage daughters, one at university and one who lives with me in Hertfordshire. I enjoy being close to nature and often walk in the woods with friends. I love going to the theatre, walking around exhibitions or listening to interesting people give talks. We can learn so much from other people. At 52, I think I have a relatively good idea of who I am as a person. None of us ever stop learning, so I don't doubt that there are parts of myself that I'm yet to meet!

Keeping it real: A selection of photos to give you an idea of what I sometimes look like..... Because NO ONE looks good ALL the time!

    Frequently Asked Questions

Please email natalie@thereconnectionclub.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.

I chose the name ‘The Reconnection Club’ for several reasons. Firstly, I firmly believe that the therapeutic process can reconnect us back to ourselves and to others. Therapy can work in surprising ways that cannot be anticipated. With the right support, a person in therapy can experience many moments of profound realisation. In turn, these moments can help to expand a person’s mindset and enable them to deeply engage with their own personal growth and healing. Even though therapy is much more socially acceptable than it ever was, I’m extremely respectful of how private some people are about seeing a therapist and that they might prefer not to disclose this information to their peers. Instead, they might choose to say they are going to a ‘club’ ... which would be the truth.

The confidentiality of my client’s is a priority, so I chose name that not only describes how I view therapy, but also a name that wouldn’t scream THERAPY!! I didn’t want anyone to feel uncomfortable if an email from me landed in their inbox. One of the definitions of a ‘club’ is to make you feel as if you are part of something bigger than yourself. So, whether your child has had therapy before or they are starting on a new journey of self-discovery, there’s a lot of value in them knowing that there is support available to them and that they are not alone.

Therapy at The Reconnection Club can benefit anyone who is struggling with a mental health challenge or looking to improve their overall emotional well-being. Having previously worked with the mental health charity MIND for a number of years and also with clients in private practice, I have supported adult clients of all ages and backgrounds. I have chosen to specialise in supporting young adults at university, however, I am still open to supporting others.

If you are the parent of a university student, perhaps struggling to adjust to your child leaving home, and feel that you would benefit from therapy sessions yourself, I would be more than happy to support you.

Please note: I am unable to support two or more members of the same family as there would be a conflict of interest.

    I'm a pluralistic integrative psychotherapist.

It is my belief that no single therapeutic approach works for all people, which is why I use different therapeutic techniques to cater for the individual needs of each client. There are several schools of therapeutic thought that I draw from.

These are mainly, but not exclusive to ….

    · Humanistic (or what some may refer to as person-centred)

    · Relational psychodynamic - Attachment theory

    · Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)

    · Internal family systems (IFS)

    · Existential concepts accompanied by Identity exploration.

By nature I have a genuinely warm and nurturing personality. I am very down to earth and comfortable in my own skin which has the benefit of putting people at ease very quickly. I accept people exactly as they are without any judgement. This way of interpersonal relating supports people in a way that enables them to feel safe in revealing their true and authentic self to me in our sessions. When people reconnect to themselves, they reinforce their own positive self-concept which in turn empowers them to grow towards reaching their full potential.

I've worked with clients facing a multitude of issues.  Issues such as anxiety, stress, depression, personality disorders, self-esteem issues, social anxiety, abuse, complex trauma, terminal illness, sexual abuse, domestic violence, PTSD, self harm, suicidal ideation, neglect, attachment issues, anger, addiction, loneliness, grief, OCD, brain damage, reclusive tendencies, relationship issues and more. There is often a reason as to why someone feels a certain way. In therapy we look to explore issues underlying the client's presenting symptoms. Very often clients find this approach helpful, however, I will closely monitor progress and will look to alter my approach if necessary. Where significant trauma is involved, at times therapy can be a case of one step forward and two steps back. Therapy is a collaborative process and in accordance with the pluralistic way in which I work, I will periodically check in with my clients to ensure that we are remaining mindful of their goals. Therapy is not a magic pill unfortunately. It is unlikely that a client's issues will disappear overnight. However, after saying that, there is every possibility that a person could start to feel so much better after our first session ...as it can be such a big relief to feel seen, heard, understood and supported by someone.

I have a master’s degree in Psychotherapy and Counselling and 6 years of practical experience working as a therapist. I have worked in private practice and as a volunteer therapist. I studied my master’s at Regents' university in London, specifically because it has an excellent reputation, and it is also considered to be 'THE' leading training institution for Psychotherapy qualifications in the UK. Throughout this extremely extensive 4-year training program, I worked with clients through the mental health charity MIND as well as the Hertfordshire based charity Family Lives. The master’s course I studied was designed by the UKCP (The UK Council for Psychotherapy), which is one of the leading organisations for psychotherapists in the UK. I am also a member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy).

In the first therapy session, we would discuss reasons for seeking therapy and goals for treatment. We will also talk about medical history and any current symptoms that are being experienced. Client's don't have to dress up for our sessions. Many students will speak to me from the privacy, convenience and comfort of their own bedrooms. All I ask is that my client's have a safe, confidential space where they feel they can speak freely.

     1. In the beginning stages of therapy, I collaborate with my client to discuss their unique and highly individual reasons as to why they may be feeling disconnected from themselves in some way. This exploration will be an ongoing discussion.

    2. After establishing a starting point, my therapeutic objective is then to engage and empower my client’s sense of agency. I do this by helping them to gain a strong sense of knowing who they are. Having this knowledge tends to anchor people and assist with the regulation of their emotions. A reduction of anxiety creates greater stability.

    3. Alongside integrative psychotherapeutic techniques, I also use solution-focused coaching methods. The lessons your child will learn in our sessions will have ongoing benefits. I equip all my clients with a psychological toolbox that can be repeatedly used throughout their lifetime to manage difficult emotions in the future.

Each therapy session lasts for one hour and costs £80.00

If the client does not attend the session they have booked or wishes to end the session sooner than the hour allocated to them they are at liberty to do so....however, the fee for the hour set aside for their session will still be charged at the agreed rate of £80.00.

Cancellation terms apply. Should you decide to proceed with therapy, these terms can be found on the initial therapy contract.

Traditionally, therapy sessions take place on the same day at the same time every week. However, this arrangement may not suit all people. The frequency of therapy sessions will depend on your individual needs, goals, and financial situation.

Many clients attend therapy once a week, while others may attend less frequently and may have reason to need to schedule different time slots on different weeks to accommodate their lecture timetable. Therapy will be tailored to the needs of each client and can continue for as little or as long as deemed necessary.

The number of sessions and the frequency of sessions can be discussed so that the expectations of client and therapist are considered.

It is advisable for clients to have one hour, weekly sessions until they feel that their symptoms have become manageable. Thereafter, some clients may decide to take a break from therapy in the knowledge that they can come back as and when needed. Some clients might decide to move to fortnightly sessions, three weekly sessions or monthly check-in sessions.

Clients have the flexibility to decide which course of action is best for them.

One off sessions are also available.

Fee information is available on request.

Payment for sessions is required prior to each session.

Parents of young adults are also welcome to book therapy sessions for themselves.

Therapy to parents can be provided as long as your child in not already engaged in therapy with myself as this dynamic would create a conflict of interest.

Comments from past and current clients

I used to stay in my room and cry a lot.

I don't do that anymore. Now I have ways of managing my anxiety. I didn't expect to enjoy therapy as much as I did, I feel like it gave me my life back.

I've spoken to my flat mates about some of the things I've learned in therapy. So, not only has therapy helped me to understand how to reduce and manage my own anxiety, it's helped me to help my friends too.

Therapy with Natalie has helped me so much in just one year. She's helped me gain so much confidence and reduce my anxiety but also so much more. Natalie has been a breath of fresh air. I look forward to our sessions.

Thank you for teaching me how to reduce my stress levels. I feel so much better than I used to, actually I feel like a different person. I feel more confident too.

The best thing about therapy was having someone to talk to outside of my family who didn't judge me. Learning to be kind to myself and how to love myself has made things much better with my family.

Thank you for your kindness Natalie, you were so easy to talk to and helped me so much. Therapy with you was a very positive experience, one that I will never forget. Thank you again, I am very grateful to you.
